Buitres leonados / Griffon Vultures

El buitre leonado es una de las cuatro especies de rapaces carroñeras presentes en la península Ibérica, junto con el quebrantahuesos, el buitre negro y el alimoche. Dispone de una envergadura de unos 250 cm y una longitud de más de 1m.

The Griffon Vulture is one of the four vulture species that we can find in the Iberian Peninsula, together with Lammergeiers, Black Vultures and Egyptian Vultures. This bird has a wingspan of 250cm and a lenght of more than 1 m.

 Su plumaje presenta tonalidades ocres y pardas, destacando siempre a primera vista su cabeza y collar blancuzcos.

It´s plumaje has brown and ocher tonalities, although at first sight excel  the pale collar and white head.

El celo de estas aves se desarrolla a principios de año, anidando posteriormente con preferencia en resaltes rocosos de toda la península ibérica formando a menudo buitreras donde se concentran decenas de parejas.

The mating season og these birds take place during the first months of the year, the nest its made on rocky areas along all the Iberian Peninsula, forming often colnies called “ buitreras” where we can find dozens of pairs.

Es un aves que se alimenta de manera prácticamente exclusiva de carroña en diferentes estadios de descomposición, consumiendo primero las partes más blandas del animal hasta dejar el cadáver prácticamente sin carne.

This bird it´s feed almost exclusively of carrion in different descomposition stages, feeding first the tenderest parts of the dead animal.

La capacidad de detección de carroña por parte de estas aves es asombrosa, y tan pronto como un ave, detecta una fuente de comida atrae la atención de otros ejemplares a muchos kilómetros de distancia llegando a producirse concentraciones de centenares de ejemplares en torno a un cadáver.

The carrion capacity detection of griffons is absolutely amazing, and as soon as a bird detect a food source call the attention of the other specimens that are several km far, finally they wiill be up to hundred birds arround the carrion.

En algunos lugares se ha comprobado que los buitres relacionan el sonido de los disparos de los cazadores con la disponibilidad de comida, dándose casos en los que estas aves llegan antes a los ejemplares abatidos que los própios cazadores.

At some places has been checked that the griffons related the shots sound with the food disponibility, even sometimes the vultures reach the carrion before the hunters arrive to it.

Los animales más hambrientos parecen ser los más agresivos y los que consiguen alimentarse antes de la carroña, una vez que los buitres finalizan su labor llegan los quebrantahuesos, alimoches y corvidos para  alimentarse de los restos del animal.

The hungriest birds seem to be more agresive and get to feed before others of the carrion, once time the griffons finish the Lammergeiers, Egyptian vultures and corvids arrive for feeding with the rest of the animal.

Los buitres están ampliamente distribuidos por la península iberica presentando sus poblaciones evoluciones diversas en función de su localización geográfica.

The vultures are widely distributed in the Iberian Peninsula.
