We become inmerse in a small discussion over Treecreepers identification, started from several photographs taken in the cantabrian mountains range, especially with a bird photographed in the meadows of Berrunde (Oseja de Sajambre-Leon). This bird, from our point of view is a Short-toed Treecreeper, however has some characteristics of Common Treecrepeer that may indicate a degree of hybridization between both species.

It is an interesting topic because we don´t know much anout these hibrids specially in the case of the Cantabrian mountains, where both species coexist in the same habitat, usually in beech and oak forests in the mountains.

The iberian peninsula is home of two different species of Treecrepeers, the Short-Toed Treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla) and the Common Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris), that is represented in our area according to the bibliography, for the subspecie macrodactyla , which is typical of Western Europe, with the exception of the British Isles where habits the subspecie britannica

Although during the 80es the  existence in our mountains of Common Treecreeper was in doubt, actually we know that the specie it is present in our woods, and abundant in many areas. The differences in the plumage between both are subtles but are well studied, and so the identification of Treecreepers using pictures it is quite easy.

Not happen the same in the field, when the birds do not stop moving, with the irritating habit of hiding in the opposite side of the trunk ,just out of sight. In these cases the singing is the key, but we know that imitations are common between the two species.

In this way, it is understood that the status  of the Common and Short-Toed Treecreeper continue being discussion objet, tending to consider to the common treecreeper less common than short toed treecreper specially in lowlands.

In the following pictures we show images of Treecreepers photographed in the the cantabrian mountains.

The first is a Common Treecreeper with all the features of the specie: the alula stain is restricted to the tip of the wing, the primaries feathers has a big notch in wing bar forming a black angle, very white tones underparts, short finch, ua very long hind-claw.

However we must indicate, that the most of the common treecreepers in the cantabrian mountains show a pure white tones, almost snowy, in the lower parts, which does not seem to match  with the description that usually its done in the bird guides about the subspecie macrodactyla, that shows a brownish tinge in the flanks and ventral feathers.

In contrast, the specimen of Berrunde has a  longer finch and the lower sides shows a brown  tones very evident. The alula is of a Short-toed Treecreeper, the wing bar characteristics match with Common Treecreepers. Also the hind-claw is considerably longer than is usual in common, although falling within the normal range of the specie.

With all this, we would like to know your point of about the photographed bird in Berrunde, and of course your experiences with these birds. We show you first picture of a Common Treecreeper, second a Short-toed Treecreeper and finally the bird of Berrunde ( Oseja de Sajambre).
